Abstract
Decisions concerning the fate of a cell are intimately linked to the proliferative state of that cell. Proliferation of certain cell populations is required to maintain or repair tissues in an aging organism. However, this proliferation must be tightly regulated. Failure to control proliferation may interfere with differentiation, causing a cell to fail to achieve its fully determined state. Potentially more severe consequences could also ensue from uncontrolled cell division. When this is accompanied by a failure of programmed cell death, a cancerous tumor can result.
