Pulse-chase experiments were used to study the kinetics of assembly of membrane proteins in E. coli. At C, the assembly of the bulk cytoplasmic membrane proteins was completed within 30 s; the assembly of the bulk outer membrane proteins required approximately 3 min to be completed. There was an inverse relationship between the rate of assembly and the apparent MW of individual membrane proteins.
