Abstract

Pulse-chase experiments were used to study the kinetics of assembly of membrane proteins in E. coli. At 25.degree. C, the assembly of the bulk cytoplasmic membrane proteins was completed within 30 s; the assembly of the bulk outer membrane proteins required approximately 3 min to be completed. There was an inverse relationship between the rate of assembly and the apparent MW of individual membrane proteins.
