Abstract

The chapter focuses on the control of retinotectal axon arbor growth by postsynaptic of CaMKII. The in vivo imaging of individual axons in the intact animal permits the observation of growing axons in their normal complex environment These observations have shown that retinal axons gradually elaborate the complex arbor by the profuse addition of excess branches and the stabilization of only a small fraction of the new branches. The elaboration of the axon arbor may be influenced by a variety of factors in the tectal environment including cell surface molecules, the extracellular matrix, growth factors and neuronal activity. It is tested whether the dynamic rearrangements seen in normal axons might reflect the outcome of activity-dependent mechanisms including postsynaptic Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) activity. A selective increase in CaMKII activity in postsynaptic tectal neurons results in the loss of shorter branch tips in the presynaptic retinal axons.
