Abstract

Increasingly robust species phylogenies, made possible by unprecedented amounts of DNA sequence data generated across the tree of life along with technological advances in gene expression and function analyses, allow us for the first time to merge data about phenotypic, developmental, and genetic changes across nearly any available group of organisms for a wide variety of traits. Recent years have also seen a marked increase in the number of non-model species used in Evo-Devo studies. We propose here a 'model clade' approach, where developmental and molecular studies are performed on multiple species across a clade with well-supported species phylogeny and multiple shifts in character traits, as a method for examining Evo-Devo more thoroughly than is possible by individual comparisons of non-model to model species.
