Abstract

Abstract Autoantibodies directed at tRNA related antigens are a feature of myositis, particularly in a syndrome of myositis with fibrosing alveolitis. Three antibodies, Jo-1, PL-7 and PL-12, inhibit the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases for histidine, threonine and alanine, respectively. Jo-1 and PL-7 antibodies recognise a protein antigen (the enzyme) to which tRNA is bound, whereas the PL-12 specificity contains separate antibodies to alanyl-tRNA synthetase and tRNA (Ala). These findings are discussed in relation to the antigen-driven and anti-idiotype hypotheses of autoantibody formation.
