Abstract

Introduction A fine-tuned coordination between extrinsic and intrinsic signaling is critical for nearly all aspects of proper brain development and function. Neurons exhibit a rich repertoire of variations around universal signaling pathway themes. In addition, neurons combine form with function to establish signaling subcompartments that dramatically expand the computational power of individual neurons within brain networks. This issue of Current Opinion in Neurobiology contains 16 articles that discuss recent results on rapidly developing topics in the field. Areas of focus include signaling in neurogenesis, chromatin remodeling, translational regulation, neuron–glia interactions, neuronal subdomains, and brain disorders.
