The QUEST system has been used to build a database for HeLa cells. These human cells are used in many laboratories for studies of the cell cycle and for biochemical studies of protein synthesis, transcription, and RNA processing. We have constructed the HeLa database to be useful for investigators working in each of these areas. The HeLa database includes basic studies of protein turnover and secretion, protein phosphorylation and glycosylation, and subcellular fractionation. Experiments have been analyzed to quantify the response of HeLa cells to heat shock, to glucose deprivation, and to inhibitors of mitochondria1 function. Most importantly, the HeLa database contains studies of cells synchronized by centrifugal elutriation and labeled at 8 periods throughout the cell cycle. Information from the database will be presented for selected proteins of interest. Known proteins in the database include cytoskeletal proteins such as the tropomyosin lightchain families, the heat shock proteins, the nuclear protein PCNA, initiation factors of protein synthesis, and proteins involved in RNA processing.
